Evanston Chinatown artifact cataloging project

For the last 11 months, undergraduate students Evan Albaugh and George Matthes have been cataloging artifacts from the Evanston Chinatown at Grinnell College’s archaeology lab. Read more about our project in this news article: https://www.grinnell.edu/news/dreaming-home

Today they are working on cataloging a faunal assemblage from the 1998 season of excavations. The large mammal bone (probably cow) below is an example of some of the bone fragments they’ve been examining.

When we’re done with the initial identification of all artifacts from Evanston Chinatown, we will send these faunal remains to zooarchaeologists – archaeologists who specialize in identifying animal bones, butchery marks, and carnivore marks – for further analysis.
